There are numerous ways to enjoy the 14th of July in France. Many celebrate by cheering parades, picnicking, and watching fabulous fireworks displays. But, there are also less traditional ways to have a happy Bastille Day.

  1. Immerse yourself in history. In Paris, guided walking tours are available that delve into the historical significance of events and places related to the French Revolution. For example, you may visit the Place de la Bastille, a well-known square in Paris. Today, there is no sign of the prison, but it still serves as a gathering space for political protesters.

  2. Move your journey to the River Seine. Boat tours can be scheduled for your Bastille Day celebrations. These tours often involve some sightseeing and dining with a premier viewing location for the evening’s fireworks. Via boat, you’ll likely be able to see the arches of Notre Dame, the Conciergerie (a former prison that was used extensively during the French Revolution to hold those awaiting the guillotine), and the glass dome of the Grand Palais (just like the Eiffel Tower, this structure was created to impress the crowds of the World’s Fair and still remains today).

  3. Take a side trip away from Paris. Numerous cities around Paris are also famous for their Bastille Day celebrations. Consider arranging a road trip to one of these less congested destinations as an alternative to the traditional festivities with massive crowds. Cities such as Tours and Saumur are often enjoyed because they have a more local feel with less chaotic celebrations and fantastic fireworks displays after the sun goes down.

No matter which type of celebration you’d like to create for a happy Bastille Day experience, we can help. Contact us today to set up your customized tour plan to enjoy all of the exciting festivities of this premier French holiday.
